“They are admirable because they have brought
the brand “Catalunya” outside the limits of our nation.” If I was forced to
define “Els Manel” with only one sentence, I think I would use this one.
I have been
thinking a lot about who are the ones I admire the most and finally, I have
chosen “Els Manel” because in my opinion they are a really good group of Catalan
musicians that export our language all over the world. Arnau Vallvé, Martí
Maymó, Roger Padilla and Guillem Gisbert, are the four members of “Els Manel”.
Firstly, I
love this group because when they published their first album, Els millors professors europeus, I had
only listened to one song (Al mar!) and
I already believed that it was the best song ever.
I also love
them because they aren’t the typical music group who sing the archetypal themes;
they are different but interesting. And, if you think you have no reason to
listen to them, I must say that they were nominated by “Enderrock” as the best pop-rock group of the year in 2009.
Finally, I
want to say that their second album, 10
milles per veure una bona aventura, has become, in only ten days, the best-
selling album in Spain; a figure that reflects perfectly well that this group isn’t
only popular in Catalonia and that those who
can appreciate good music, all love “Els Manel”.
In my view, they
still haven’t arrived at the height of their musical career because I think
that for people like them, a top doesn’t exist.
To conclude my
little composition, I only wish “Els Manel” the best and I hope that they can
continue doing what they enjoy the most: singing in Catalan.

3 Look at the prompts below. Choose five and use them to create
your own story. Tell
your
story in the five stages described in 1 and include some of the words and
phrases in 2. When you are ready, tell your story to the class.
a secretary an office party a car crash an airport a text message the CEO
a bottle of champagne a business trip a broken lift a hotel bridal suite
a stolen laptop a strange taxi ride €60,000 an e-mail a meal in a restaurant
Story written by Maria Solanes (2n BAT D), English class: level 5
Everything started with an e-mail.
I was on a business trip travelling to London by train, watching the landscape through the window, when suddenly my phone rang. It was my secretary, James, saying that I had a new strange e-mail. His voice sounded alarmed and worried, so I opened my laptop and checked it. The e-mail was anonymous and very suspicious.
"Dear Miss Solanes,
Right now I'm in the same train as you. I'll kill someone soon. Watch carefully!"
The first thing I felt was that someone was doing a joke, so I closed the laptop and tried to sleep.
Suddenly I heard a scream from another seat. It was a woman shouting because her husband seemed to be dead.
Someone said: "I'm a doctor. Let me pass!". The man touched the body and confirmed that he was dead, he had been poisoned by champaigne.
I recieved a text message that said: "Do you believe me now? You are the next".
I was very afraid. I ran into tvhe bathroom and closed the door. I didn't realize that someone was behind me. It was a man in dark clothes holding a knife in one hand.
Smiling, he said: "I told you you were next". I tried to open the door, but I couldn't. The man was near. After pushing the door desperately again and again, it finally opened. I fell on the floor, shouting and screaming...
Everybody in the train was looking at me. When I looked at the man, he was smiling, with the knife on the floor. And then...
-"Happy birthday!"
Everybody in the train started to sing and my best friend appeared from the cabin. He said he wanted to celebrate my birthday with a different party.

TWO WORLDS by Berta Soler (4C)
I’m caught between two worlds
It
makes me think all night
It
makes me stir my soul
I’m caught between two worlds
Is
now when I realise
That
reality is worst than fiction
That
is unstable to have a perfect life
I’m caught between two worlds
The
loved and the hated worlds
When
everything seems to be the Paradise
It
can become the feared storm
I’m caught between two worlds
My
world and their world
But
maybe I’ll lose all I have
And
I’ll have to close my heart
I’m caught between two worlds
It
seems easy when it’s all fine
But
when the world turns bad
All
goods become sads

Cover inspired in the 2nd term reader Two Worlds (4th ESO)
This book cover reflects that “two worlds”
is a way to say that there are people with everyday problems, but they can
decide what they are going to do (world one). But in the other world there are
people that, for some reason, are alone or far away from their countries,
families or friends. The reasons can be a death, the difference of culture or religion,
economic problems, natural disasters… For this, they don’t know where to go
(world two).
World
one is beautiful, with a lot of colours and a lot
of opportunities and ways to do what you want. In world two the colours are missing, like the opportunities to do
what you want. You only can do what you can.

The legend of St. George
Once upon a time there was a dragon that
lived in a town. He was very hungry so he ate all the animals of the town,
cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, etc...
When there were no more animals, the dragon started to eat the
people of the town.
In order to decide who he would eat every day, he made a lottery
of the young people.
One day the princess was chosen from the lottery. The king was sad
because he did not want his daughter to die, but the people of the town said
that it was only fear if the king’s daughter died too.
Then the princess went to the cave of the dragon to be eaten. And
then St. George appeared ,who killed the dragon and with the blood of the dragon
he make a rose and he gave it to the princess.
Since that legend every year the boys give a rose to the girls and
the girls a book to the boys.
